The International Maritime Organization (IMO) was established in Geneva in 1948. As of 2014, there are 171 member states of the IMO. The IMO's primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping. IMO is the source of 60 legal instruments (conventions, etc.) The majority of conventions fall into three main categories:

Liability and Compensation

Maritime Safety
